If you’ve only had the classic saucy street-style tteokbokki… you are missing out on a hidden Korean favorite.

What is Fried Tteokbokki?

Fried tteokbokki (기름 ė–”ė³¶ģ“) is a Korean rice cake dish made by stir-frying rice cakes in oil with soy sauce, garlic, and chili flakes instead of a spicy sauce. It is crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside.

And best of all? It’s quick, simple, and incredibly addictive.

⭐ Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Unlike the more famous gochujang-based tteokbokki, this version:

  • Uses oil and pepper flakes (gochugaru) instead of sauce

  • Focuses on caramelization and texture

  • Delivers a deep, umami-packed flavorĀ in minutes

This is the kind of tteokbokki many Koreans grew up eating at home — simple, comforting, and full of flavor.

šŸ‘©ā€šŸ³ How To Make Fried Tteokbokki

1. Prep the Rice Cakes

If using refrigerated or frozen rice cakes, bring to room temperature. No need to soak in water for this recipe.

2. Make the Sauce

In a bowl, mix:

  • Soy sauce

  • Oyster sauce

  • Brown sugar

  • Gochugaru

  • Garlic

  • Hot water

Set aside.

3. Stir-Fry

Preheat frying pan. Add oil in a pan over medium heat. Add rice cakes and onion.

Cook until lightly golden and slightly crispy. You can add the optional Fish Cakes or Bulgogi now and cook for about 1 minute (bulgogi meat doesn't not need to cook fully at this point, since it will continue to cook with the sauce, during next step).

4. Add Sauce

Pour in the sauce and stir continuously.

Let the rice cakes:

  • Absorb flavor

  • Slightly caramelize

  • Develop a glossy coating

5. Finish

Add optional butter for richness (HIGHLY recommended šŸ˜„)

Garnish with:

  • Scallions

  • Sesame seeds

  • Extra gochugaru

Serve immediately.

šŸ”„ Pro Tips (This Makes ALL the Difference)

āœ” Don’t overcrowd the pan — you want caramelization

āœ” Slight crisp = BEST texture

āœ” Butter at the end = next-level flavor

āœ” Eat immediately — texture is best fresh
