Turn your canned tuna into a delicious Korean side dish without having to turn on the stove! Yup, easy canned tuna recipe that tastes like some fancy fish dish. All you need are soy sauce, Korean red pepper flakes, and some vegetables to turn you canned tuna into a delicious Korean side dish that you can enjoy with warm Korean rice and also turn it into a seaweed wrap.

1 teaspoon 작은 술 = 5 ml

1 tablespoon 큰술 = 1/2 fluid ounce, 15 ml, 15 cc

1 Cup 컵 = 128 grams

1 lb = 450 grams


Serving Size: 2 - 3 Adult

5 oz Canned Tuna 참치통조림

¼ Cup 컵 Soy Sauce 양조간장

2 Tablespoons 큰술 Minced Scallion 다진 쪽파

1 Tablespoon 큰술 Red Onion 빨간양파

1 Tablespoon 큰술 Mirin 미림

1 Tablespoon 큰술 GoChuGaRu 고춧가루

1/2 Tablespoon 큰술 Sesame Seeds 참깨

1/2 Tablespoon 큰술 Minced Garlic 다진마늘

1/2 Teaspoon 작은술 Brown Sugar 흑설탕

¼ Teaspoon 작은술 Grated Ginger 간생강

Optional: 1 Tablespoon 큰술 Minced Spicy Green Pepper (seeds removed) 씨없이 다진 고추

Canned Tuna

Korean Red Pepper Flakes

(Fine Ground) 고운 고춧가루:

(Coarse Ground) 고춧가루:

All-Purpose Soy Sauce 양조간장

Dark Brown Sugar 흑설탕

Sesame Seeds 참깨

Korean Cooking Wine/Mirin 미림

Microwavable Cooked Korean Rice (perfect if you don't have time to make Korean rice!)

Step One

Remove the tuna to a small container and break up the meat, using a fork. Discard the liquid leftover in the can.

  • 5 oz Canned Tuna 참치통조림 (canned in water or oil work)

Step Two

In a small mixing bowl, add the following ingredients.

  • ¼ Cup 컵 Soy Sauce 양조간장

  • 1 Tablespoon 큰술 Red Onion 빨간양파

  • 1 Tablespoon 큰술 Minced Scallion 다진 쪽파

  • 1 Tablespoon 큰술 Mirin 미림

  • 1 Tablespoon 큰술 GoChuGaRu 고춧가루 (omit, if you prefer a non-spicy taste)

  • 1/2 Tablespoon 큰술 Sesame Seeds 참깨

  • 1/2 Tablespoon 큰술 Minced Garlic 다진마늘

  • 1/2 Teaspoon 작은술 Brown Sugar 흑설탕

  • ¼ Teaspoon 작은술 Grated Ginger 간생강

  • Optional: 1 Tablespoon 큰술 Minced Spicy Green Pepper (seeds removed) 씨없이 다진 고추

Mix the ingredients well. Pour the soy sauce mixture on the tuna. Do not mix up the sauce with the tuna meat. Just spread the soy sauce mixture on top of the tuna so the surface is covered in the sauce. You can eat this right away, let it sit on your kitchen counter for 30 minutes before eating or store in the fridge for 12 to 24 hours to marinate.

Taste Differences:

After 30 minutes of making it, it is delicious and tastes like canned tuna with savory soy sauce, and the refreshing tastes of the vegetables. The spiciness is definitely more pronounced.

After 12 to 24 hours in the fridge, it tastes more like cooked fish with all the soy sauce mixture ingredients completely drenched into the tuna meat. The spiciness is definitely not as raw tasting, but more mellowed out.

Step Three

Add a big spoonful of the soy sauce seasoned tuna to a bowl of warm Korean rice. Maybe add some roasted seaweed crumbles (called Kim 김), and light drizzle of sesame oil to the bowl. Mix it all up and enjoy! Of course, having this with kimchi will turn this into a simple and delicious Korean meal. Also, you can make a simple seaweed wrap. Add a spoonful of warm Korean rice to a small piece of seaweed, a slice of avocado, some soy sauce seasoned tuna, a piece of kimchi, and ENJOY😋

Eat it with warm Korean rice, please. Yes, not all Asian rices are the same. Korean rice is uniquely different from other Asian rice.
